GMT + 1hr

YEAR : 2008
EXHIBITION : Transmissions, solo show, SSamzie Space, Seoul, KR
MEASURES : 156 x 560 x 7 cm
MATERIALS : Melamine coated chip boards, wooden fillets, paint, neon tubes, fixtures, screws, computers, light sensitive sensors, cables, formers.

The idea of GMT + 1hr is to create a 8 hours time difference in the Main Gallery of SSamzie Space meaning that the gallery space will be illuminated by the exact same daylight which is present in Copenhagen center, Denmark, at the exact same time.

The work consists of 4 wooden cassettes which is installed on the south wall. Together they create a 156 x 560 cm horizontal rectangular field. 64 neon tubes in different daylight nuances are mounted on the front of the cassettes. In specific combinations and intensities they can create all daylight tones from warm orange white to cold blue white.

A sensor is situated in Denmark. It continuously transmits the daylight color and intensity through the internet to a computer in Korea which dimes and mixes the neon tubes on the wall to recreate the daylight in Denmark. This manifest itself in an abnormal light situation: when the exhibition opens at 11 am (Korean time) the space will be completely dark, around 1:30 PM (Korean time) the light modules begin to stream the sunset in Copenhagen, when the exhibition closes at 7 PM (Korean time) the light level will be close to it’s maximum. Through the transportation of light a shift of time and space is created. The Main Gallery is turned into a time pocket, which is 8 hours behind korean time (GMT+9hr) but totally in sync with danish time (GMT+1hr).

Time zone timetable:
The timetable illustrates the time zones of Korea and Denmark. The two time zones are situated analogous which makes the 8 hour time difference comparable crosswise the time zones. When you look at the timetable it appears that when the exhibition opens in Seoul at 11 AM Korean time, the Main Gallery will be completely dark. At this moment the time is 3 AM in the morning in Denmark. Around 1 PM Korean time, it’s sunrise in Denmark, meaning that the light in the Main Gallery slowly rises.

Transmission diagram:
The diagram shows the principle of the light metering in Copenhagen, the transmission to laptop 1, the continuous transmission of the data to laptop 2 in the Main Gallery via an internet connection and the transfer of data into an electriv power stream which controles the light modules in the Main Gallery.
